Agra | Lucknow | Varanasi

Fortunately, Shah Jahan’s legacy lives on in the lanes of Agra, where craftsmen believed to be descendants of the master-craftsmen who worked on the Taj, have preserved the technique of pietra dura ornamentation as practiced by their forefathers during the Mughal period.  Slivers of stone are shaped on an emery wheel, and fixed in finely-chiseled cavities to fashion a range of articles including boxes, plates, decoration and furniture pieces and lamps.  And reliving the resplendent costumes and textiles of the Mughal era are craftsmen who embroider apparel and articles such as bags and belts with gold thread, metal elements along with semi-precious stones.  You can get good buys  in the main, colourful marketplace of Kinari Bazaar.

Apart from Agra’s crafts there are also handicrafts from different parts of India such as carpets, jewellery, shawls and metal objects that are available in the city.  In myriad ways, memories of the great Mughals who metamorphosed Agra into an imperial city, live on here, echoing the sentiments expressed on the magnificent gateway to Akbar’s mausoleum: “These are the gardens of Eden, enter them and live forever”.
